San Diego Chargers fans are getting excited for the upcoming season of the NFL. However, on the other coast of the U.S., the fans of the Jaguars are not as thrilled. One of their prized draft picks from the 2012 NFL Draft, Justin Blackmon, was arrested for marijuana possession recently. It was yet another arrest in a long line of them for Blackmon, and it has put his NFL career on hold indefinitely.
According to the police, Blackmon was in traffic but then decided to maneuver out of it, supposedly in an illegal effort, to get to a turn lane. The police pulled Blackmon over and said they smelled the scent of marijuana coming from his car. Blackmon admitted to smoking marijuana, while also possessing some marijuana in his car.
Blackmon was already on indefinite suspension from the NFL for repeated violations of the league's drug policy, and this will only make things worse for the embattled wide receiver.
What this story shows is that drug charges can have a major impact on a person's professional life. A drug conviction can absolutely derail your career, and it is likely that such a charge would make it difficult for you to find work elsewhere.
This isn't something specific to the high-profile nature of a professional sport. This could happen to anyone. A drug charge carries many legal and indirect consequences with it. That is why it is imperative for anyone accused of such a crime to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.
